How we calculated this (formula trace)
Gross = 30 × ($4.50 + $4.00 + $1.50) = $300.00
Fuel = (220 mi ÷ 28 mpg) × $3.45 = $27.11
Maintenance = 220 mi × $0.08 = $17.60
IRS mileage deduction = 220 mi × $0.76 (Jul 1 – Dec 31, 2026) = $167.20
SE tax = $132.80 × 92.35% × 15.3% = $18.76
Fed income tax ≈ $2,989.05/yr ÷ 52 = $57.48
State income tax ≈ $836.93/yr ÷ 52 = $16.09
Net = $300.00 − $44.71 − $92.34 = $162.95

Local legal pay floor — New York City, NY

NYC Minimum Pay Rate for app-based delivery workers. Since April 1, 2026, restaurant and grocery delivery apps (including DoorDash, Grubhub, Uber Eats, and Instacart) must pay delivery workers in New York City at least $22.13 per hour for time spent preparing for and making deliveries, not including tips. Tips are paid on top. The rate is adjusted for inflation every April 1. This rule applies only to deliveries in New York City, not the rest of New York State.

  • Minimum hourly pay: $22.13/hr (before tips)

Delivering in New York: what to expect

New York delivery drivers work as independent contractors for DoorDash and Grubhub, which means your earnings are built entirely from per-delivery pay — base pay, 100% of customer tips, and platform incentives — with no hourly wage, no paycheck withholding, and no employer-paid benefits. The calculator above is pre-filled with New York's approximate average gas price of $3.45/ gallon and a state income tax estimate so the take-home figure reflects conditions where you actually drive.

The 2026 IRS standard mileage rate is $0.725/ mile for deliveries made January 1 through June 30, and $0.76/ mile from July 1 through December 31. This mid-year increase (Announcement 2026-11) matters because it is the deduction you use to offset delivery income on your tax return — a higher rate means a bigger deduction and a lower tax bill. Our calculator applies the correct rate automatically based on the delivery date you enter.

As a contractor in New York, you owe self-employment tax of 15.3% on your net business earnings (covering Social Security and Medicare, which an employer would otherwise split with you), plus federal income tax, and New York state income tax. The state minimum wage of $17.00/hour in New York City, Long Island, and Westchester ($16.00/hour in the rest of the state) is a useful reference point, but it is not legally binding for gig workers — you are not an employee. Plan to set aside roughly 25–35% of your net profit for taxes and pay quarterly estimated taxes to avoid underpayment penalties.

New York is one of the few jurisdictions with a specific legal pay floor for app-based delivery workers. New York City enforces its own Minimum Pay Rate for app-based delivery workers, summarized in the highlighted box above. Drivers outside New York City are not covered by this rule. If your platform pay falls below this floor, the platform is required to make up the difference. Always confirm the current rate with the official source, as these legal minimums are adjusted periodically.

Fuel is typically the largest variable cost for New York drivers, and it moves with the local market. The default $3.45/ gallon figure is an approximate state average — edit it to match your regular station for a more accurate result. Maintenance (tires, oil, brakes) adds roughly $0.08/ mile based on AAA data, and dead miles — the distance you drive between paid deliveries — often account for a surprising share of total miles, so include them in your weekly total.

DoorDash generally offers higher order volume in most markets, while Grubhub's Perks Program can reward drivers who hit mileage thresholds. See our full DoorDash vs Grubhub pay comparison for the side-by-side breakdown.

NYC's $22.13 minimum pay rate in practice

New York City was the first US city to set a minimum pay rate for app-based delivery workers. The rate started at $17.96 per hour in December 2023 and has risen every year since, reaching $22.13 per hour on April 1, 2026. Since January 26, 2026, the rule also covers grocery delivery apps such as Instacart, and restaurant and grocery apps must give customers an option to tip at checkout.

Here is a simple example. If 20 of your weekly hours count as delivery time under your app's pay method, your minimum for the week is 20 × $22.13 = $442.60 before tips. If your base pay and incentives come to less than that, the app must make up the difference. Your tips are added on top and do not count toward the minimum.

Outside New York City, including Long Island, Westchester, Buffalo, Rochester, and Albany, there is no delivery-specific pay floor. Drivers there are paid only by each platform's standard per-delivery pay model, which is why the calculator's default numbers are most useful for drivers outside the city.

New York State and NYC taxes for delivery drivers

As an independent contractor in New York, you pay federal self-employment tax and federal income tax, plus New York State income tax. If you live in New York City, you also owe New York City personal income tax, which is added on top of the state tax and is based on where you live, not where you deliver. This means two drivers with the same earnings can owe different amounts depending on whether they live inside or outside the five boroughs.

Self-employed people with more than $50,000 of net earnings from self-employment in the Metropolitan Commuter Transportation District (NYC and the surrounding counties) may also owe the Metropolitan Commuter Transportation Mobility Tax (MCTMT). The calculator gives a general state tax estimate only, so NYC residents should set aside a little more than the calculator suggests and confirm the details with a tax professional.

Delivering by e-bike in New York City

Many New York City delivery workers use e-bikes or scooters instead of cars. If you deliver by e-bike, set the gas price field close to $0 and the fuel efficiency field to a high number, then raise the maintenance per mile field to reflect battery, tire, and brake costs. Your IRS standard mileage deduction works differently for bikes than for cars, so check with a tax professional before claiming it. New York City requires e-bikes and batteries sold in the city to meet recognized safety certification standards, so buy certified equipment to lower fire risk.

How DoorDash & Grubhub pay drivers

Both platforms classify drivers as independent contractors, so there is no hourly wage or paycheck — your pay is built from per-delivery components. The structure is similar on both, but the details differ enough to matter for your bottom line.

DoorDash

Base Pay ($2–$10/delivery by distance, time, desirability) + 100% of tips + Peak Pay ($1–$8/delivery in high-demand windows). DoorDash earns from restaurant commissions and customer fees — it does not take a cut of your pay.

Grubhub

Base pay (calculated from distance + delivery type + time) + 100% of tips + Perks Program incentives for hitting mileage thresholds. Instant Cash Out is available.

What gets subtracted from your pay

Gross pay is only half the story. As an independent contractor you cover your own vehicle costs and set aside your own taxes. Our calculator subtracts these line items so you see true take-home, not just the deposit.

Fuel
Miles driven × local gas price ÷ your vehicle's MPG. The default gas price is your state average and is editable.
Maintenance (~$0.08/mile)
Tires, oil changes, brakes, and routine servicing — based on AAA per-mile maintenance estimates. Editable if you track your own.
IRS standard mileage deduction
For 2026 the rate is $0.725/mile (Jan–Jun) and $0.76/mile (Jul–Dec) — a rare mid-year IRS update (Announcement 2026-11). The calculator auto-selects the correct rate from your delivery date. This is a tax deduction, not a cash expense.
Self-employment tax (15.3%)
Covers Social Security (12.4%) and Medicare (2.9%), applied to 92.35% of your net business earnings. Employees split this with an employer; contractors pay the full amount.
Federal & state income tax
A rough bracket-based reserve estimate tied to your total annual income. State tax is zero in the 9 no-income-tax states. This is an estimate, not a filing.
