DoorDash’s $131.5 Million NYC Settlement: Who Gets Paid, How Much, and When

On September 22, 2026, New York City announced a $131.5 million settlement with DoorDash over how the app paid its delivery workers. It is the largest worker settlement in the city’s history, and more than 260,000 Dashers are in line for a payment. If you delivered for DoorDash in New York City at any point since April 2022, this guide explains whether you are likely to be included, how the money is calculated, when it arrives, and what you need to do. In most cases, the answer to that last question is: nothing.

The short answer

  • Who is covered: people who delivered for DoorDash in New York City between April 22, 2022 and November 29, 2026 and were underpaid, paid late, or not paid at all.
  • Do you need to file a claim? No. The city identified eligible workers from DoorDash’s own records.
  • When: the first payment emails go out in late October 2026. A smaller second round follows in early 2027.
  • How much: it depends on your account history. Workers who were never paid get three times what they were owed, and workers who were paid late get double.

What happened

New York City’s Department of Consumer and Worker Protection (DCWP) opened the investigation after dozens of delivery workers reported that DoorDash had not paid them, or had paid them late, for work they had already done. Investigators then analyzed DoorDash’s pay records, covering more than 152 million payment transactions and 110 million working hours, and found two kinds of problems.

The first was simple: some workers were never paid, or were paid after the legal deadline. The second involved the city’s Minimum Pay Rate, which is currently $22.13 an hour before tips. DoorDash raised pay to the minimum in December 2023, but according to the city it left out some categories of trip time and on-call time when it calculated how many hours each worker should be paid for.

DoorDash tells the story a little differently. The company said the mistakes were not intentional and described New York City’s pay standard as the most complex in the country. By its breakdown, about $12.3 million covers missing or late payments, and more than $83 million settles a disagreement over how to pay for the time Dashers spend online between deliveries. DoorDash says the average missing payment was $7.70.

Where the $131.5 million goes

Payments to delivery workersMore than $115 million
Civil penalties and costsMore than $16 million
Total$131.5 million

How much will you get?

There is no single payout amount. What you receive depends on what happened in your account:

  • You were never paid for work: you get the amount you were owed plus 200%. A worker who was owed $1,000 and never received it gets $3,000.
  • You were paid late: a worker who was paid $1,000 later than the law allows gets $2,000.
  • You were paid below the Minimum Pay Rate: your share is calculated in proportion to your trip time during the pay periods when the underpayment happened.

According to the city, more than 27,000 workers will receive over $1,000. Many others will get much smaller amounts. News reports on the settlement put the minimum payment at $10 and the median at about $48. Your settlement email will show your exact amount.

Timeline: when the money arrives

  • End of September 2026: a settlement hotline opens for questions and for updating your email address.
  • Late October 2026: the settlement administrator, Simpluris, emails every worker who was underpaid between April 22, 2022 and June 28, 2026. The email goes to the last address you used with DoorDash and states the amount you are owed.
  • Early 2027: a second, smaller round of payments covers underpayments between June 29 and November 29, 2026. The city says DoorDash is still fixing part of its time calculation, and this round may include some workers who use DashLink.

What you need to do

  1. Make sure you can receive the email. The notice goes to the last email address you used with DoorDash. If you no longer have access to that inbox, contact the settlement administrator at Info@NYCDoorDashSettlement.com or use the settlement hotline to update it.
  2. Watch your inbox in late October, including your spam and promotions folders.
  3. Choose how you want to be paid. You can pick an electronic payment or a check by mail. If you do not choose, a check will be mailed to your last-known address, so make sure DoorDash has your current mailing address.
  4. Keep the notice. It is your record of how much you received and why.

Watch out for settlement scams

Large settlements attract fake emails and text messages. Keep these points in mind:

  • You do not have to pay anything or file a claim to receive this money.
  • No legitimate settlement notice will ask for your DoorDash password or a fee to release your payment.
  • If a message looks suspicious, do not click its links. Go to the official DCWP DoorDash settlement page on nyc.gov instead.

Is the settlement money taxable?

Payments that replace pay you should have earned may count as taxable income. Keep your settlement notice with your tax records for the year you receive the money, and ask a tax professional how to report it. If you are still dashing, this is also a good moment to check that you are setting aside enough for self-employment and income taxes.

What changes for NYC Dashers going forward

The settlement also changes how DoorDash operates in the city:

  • No unpaid offers: DoorDash must update its app so it cannot offer a New York City delivery unless the worker’s time is being recorded as paid on-call time or trip time.
  • Batched orders: every leg of a batched trip must be paid at the Minimum Pay Rate, ending lower rates for some legs.
  • More pay information: workers will see more detail about their work time and pay in the app.
  • Monthly reports: DoorDash must send detailed data to DCWP every month for three years and keep an internal compliance monitor.
  • A worker data tool: Workers Justice Project and Princeton’s Workers’ Algorithm Observatory are building software that lets workers share their trip and pay data with the city. DoorDash is not allowed to block or penalize workers for using it.

Does this affect drivers outside New York City?

No. The settlement enforces New York City’s own delivery worker laws, so it only covers work done in the five boroughs. Most of the country has no minimum pay rule for delivery apps at all. California’s Prop 22 and Seattle’s app-based worker law are the main exceptions. Our guide to DoorDash minimum pay in California vs NYC and our Washington pay page explain how those rules work.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to file a claim for the DoorDash NYC settlement?

No. DCWP identified everyone who is owed money by analyzing DoorDash’s records. Eligible workers will receive an email from the settlement administrator. You do not need to submit evidence.

When will DoorDash settlement payments be sent?

Settlement emails go out in late October 2026 to workers underpaid between April 22, 2022 and June 28, 2026. A second round of payments for June 29 to November 29, 2026 is expected in early 2027.

How much money will I get from the DoorDash settlement?

It depends on your account. Workers who were never paid get three times the amount owed, and workers who were paid late get double. Minimum pay shortfalls are shared out based on trip time. More than 27,000 workers will receive over $1,000.

I don’t drive for DoorDash anymore. Can I still get paid?

Eligibility is based on work you did in New York City between April 22, 2022 and November 29, 2026, not on whether you still dash. Make sure you can access the email address you last used with DoorDash, or update it through the settlement hotline.
